LISTENING TO THE OCEAN

Have you ever thought you could hear the ocean when holding a large shell to your ear? Even when you are far from the beach, it is amazing to hear ocean sounds in a shell. Is it really the ocean you are hearing? No, it's not. The sounds that you hear in a seashell are actually the same sounds that are being made around you when the shell is not against your ear. Some of the sounds around you are so low that you don't hear or pay attention to them. When you hold a large seashell up to your ear, something happens to those sounds.

Inside the shell is a hollow area that makes sound louder. This works much like the hollow body of a guitar. The inside of the seashell is picking up all the little noises around you and making them louder and bigger. Together, they kind of sound like the roar of the ocean!
