The Great Wall of China is one of the most incredible structures ever built. In 221 BC, Emperor Shih Huang Ti ordered the wall to be built because he wanted to keep out China's enemies. It started as three separate walls to protect the three different states of China from their enemies. The walls were joined together many years later when the three states came together.

The wall is 4,163 miles long -- the longest in the world! It is twenty five feet high and goes over mountains, through valleys and across deserts. The Great Wall of China was built completely by hand from earth, brick and stone. Today, some parts of the wall are damaged or missing because of natural causes or people.
