MOUNT EVEREST
Mount Everest is the highest mountain on earth. It stands 29, 035 feet tall on the border of Nepal and China (Tibet area) in Asia. It was named after Sir George Everest, the first person to record the mountain's height and location in 1865.
Many adventurous people have climbed or tried to climb Mount Everest. The journey is a very dangerous and difficult one. The first seven attempts to climb Everest started in 1921. No one made it. George Mallory, who led the first three expeditions, died on the mountain along with Andrew Irvine in 1924. Many others lost their lives in falls or avalanches over the years.
In 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first to reach the summit, or top, of Mount Everest. Since then, many others have set out to be the first to do other things on Everest, like taking different routes or climbing without the help of oxygen tanks.
